Reiki
Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) means ‘Universal Life Force Energy’. It is an ancient, gentle but powerful energy healing system, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan. It is the energy that surrounds and flows through all living things.
Reiki assists you to feel a deep sense of inner peace and to feel more balanced in mind, body and spirit. It allows you to experience your true nature, to access a state where everything is perfect, no matter what is going on in your life. This feeling of connection and ‘oneness’ can have a profoundly healing effect and makes it easier to gain personal insights, information and clarity, during and after the session.
Some people feel the Reiki energy as warmth, coolness, tingling or swirling. Some see dream-like images, lights and colours; some feel like they’re floating and others feel heavy. Some aches and pains or emotions may temporarily come to the surface during or after the treatment; this is normal and can be seen as the body’s way of gently releasing anything that’s not needed, like an energetic detox. However, it is also perfectly normal not to see or feel anything other than peaceful relaxation. Some clients see it as simply a chance to be still, switch off from their busy lives and receive some nurturing energy. One-off or sporadic sessions usually give more temporary results but longer lasting results can be achieved over time, with more sessions and/or self-practice.
A more empowering way to achieve ongoing results in the long run would be to learn how to give yourself treatments. The original Japanese Usui Reiki wasn't actually designed as a holistic therapy. It was (and still is at its core) a simple system for spiritual and self development. Mikao Usui usually taught students one to one rather than in a group and the unfolding of the practice would last for probably decades before anyone could be considered a Reiki Master. I've been practicing Reiki since 2007 and I still feel like a beginner in many ways. I hope to always feel that way - I don't think anyone's supposed to feel like they've truly mastered something. Where would the fun be in that? I don't teach Reiki regularly but every now and then I teach Reiki Levels 1 and/or 2, in a one-to-one format. At the moment, I really only teach people who are mainly interested in learning it for self-healing/development, who have contacted me because they specifically want me to teach them for some reason and who understand that my main practice is shamanic (as even during a Reiki course some shamanic elements can end up sneaking up on us unexpectedly! This is a lot of fun but might be annoying if you're a purist...). If you want to learn Reiki to immediately become a working Reiki Practitioner, offering it as a holistic therapy, then you would probably be better learning with a Reiki teacher who teaches larger groups and perhaps runs regular Reiki Shares etc. That way you can immediately start trying it out on other people and connect with Reiki communities etc. It's important to find the right teacher for you and I'd rather not teach you at all if I'm not offering what you need. On the other hand, if you decide to learn one-to-one you get 100% of the time, focus and attention devoted to you, which could be just what you're looking for to kick-start your Reiki journey.
