Description and Useful Information
- Shamanic healing involves playful meditative practices with the intention of transforming negative/intrusive energetic patterns that may have resulted in some kind of imbalance and returning positive/helpful energy (or a positive aspect of your psyche, for example) that has perhaps been lost or blocked at some point in life (usually due to physical/mental/emotional stress, trauma, shock, loss or illness etc). This is facilitated by a shaman (or, in the western world, a shamanic practitioner). Shamanic work is always done from the heart and with compassion. It can often bring about massive shifts and healing results, especially if you are willing to continue to work on yourself and self-reflect beyond the session, either with or without a practitioner. It provides an opportunity to reconnect with/discover your true self, to feel more empowered and in alignment.
- It's a surprisingly practical process that can greatly affect your physical reality, rather than just being a whimsical escape or 'woo-woo'. Decluttering your psyche/soul, like decluttering your house, might require a surface tidy or a deeper process but lasting results require you to maintain the 'tidy' in some way rather than simply complaining that it's a mess again after a few months. It also works beautifully alongside standard medical practices, talking therapies etc. If you're already being supported by a medical team for mental or physical health issues, then check with them if you're not sure whether this is right for you. Please note that shamanic practitioners often share healing stories about overcoming obstacles in their own lives through shamanic healing or inspiring stories from various spiritual traditions (wisdom teachings, archetypes and myths etc.). These stories are shared as motivational mirrors, to inspire and empower you to access a hopeful perspective on overcoming your own challenges or perhaps shifting into state of acceptance, gratitude, resilience etc. However, the talking during a shamanic session is not counselling or psychotherapy.
- There are various types of shamanic healing techniques, depending on what's needed at the time of your session. Usually a combination of clearing & restoring methods are required. The exact techniques needed will become clear during the talk at the start of your session. You'll have a chance to ask questions and share anything you feel is relevant at that point but you'll never be pushed to talk in detail. The rest of the session then unfolds from there, rather than being discussed or planned in advance so, don't worry, it's absolutely normal to not know what you need in advance and to feel a bit anxious, especially if you've never done anything like this before. Some sessions might create energy shifts via a lot of talk and storytelling, while others may involve less talking and more non-verbal forms of healing.
- Most people initially find me through word of mouth and the majority of my clients are actually people who say they wouldn't normally do stuff like this. - You'll be guided safely through the whole experience and people often mention how surprisingly normal it all feels at the time, considering it's something that (let's face it!) can sound a bit out of the ordinary if you're new to it. This work seems to tap into empowering resources and wisdom that all humans carry within, so it can end up feeling strangely familiar rather than something completely new. In many ways, a practitioner is simply reminding you of your true self, that still exists underneath layers of whatever negative thoughts, beliefs and coping mechanisms you've gathered through challenging life experiences or even from just being too stuck in your headspace.
- For info: I don't use any psychedelics. Nothing against them but it's just not the medicine I work with. I find that most clients naturally start to move into a shamanic state of consciousness during the talking part anyway and then we use percussion (e.g drums, singing bowls, rattles) and/or expansive music to help us access deeper states as the session progresses. During the session, you'll be sitting and/or lying down, fully clothed (shoes removed - please wear socks). After your session, you'll also be given an optional guided meditation that you can use beyond the session to help integrate the healing. Try to arrange your session for a time when you can just go home and rest afterwards as you'll need some time to process the experience.
- For some people, one session is enough for what they need and it acts as a sort of springboard to their next steps. For others, it's the start of a longer process. To increase the benefits and integrate the work, it's helpful if you're willing to do some self-practice and/or keep working on yourself in some other way beyond the session. However, this can be done by yourself at home if you prefer. If you're not attending regular sessions, it's likely that a few weeks after your session, you'll know whether all you needed was a one-off session or whether you want/need to explore deeper layers with me. The option is there to do more (additional healing sessions, journeying lessons, retreats, workshops, journeying group etc.) but there's never any pressure to keep returning. Sometimes the healing sessions light people up in a way that instantly returns their 'oomph! Sometimes it leads people to realise that they are now finally ready to talk to a psychotherapist or to start yoga, a sport, a creative project or whatever they feel led to next to continue their healing path. Sometimes clients have arrived at Shamanic Healing after they've successfully completed a block of therapy sessions but feel that there's a missing piece needed that can't be accessed through talking therapies. Or they might continue seeing a counsellor or medical doctor alongside shamanic sessions, to get the right balance they need. So it's really up to you to decide what fits your own circumstances as you go along. Everyone is different and part of any empowering process is discovering what you prefer and giving yourself permission to choose which combination works best for you.
- People from all over the world, from all walks of life and any belief systems can benefit from shamanic healing and journeying. It is a practice that evolves over time and can vary greatly, depending on the community, the culture and the individual practitioner. Due to the experiential nature of shamanism, It’s not necessary to 'believe' in it in order to experience healing benefits from it and, with no particular dogma attached, it's very empowering and unique to each individual. Looking at Shamanism through a psychological lens, there are many similarities to Carl Jung's theory of the 'collective unconscious'. It's just the same playing field but a shamanic approach to the game is more spiritual and playful; more experiential than analytical. These days, more and more people are becoming interested in shamanic healing, mainly because it can be so effective. Doing the inner work seems to create a shift in the external but intention and focus are key. As they say, 'where thought goes, energy flows'. It can also reveal any negative patterns of thinking that perhaps started out as self-protection but have ended up creating a sort of inner self-sabotage. There can be family generational patterns that have somehow got stuck on a loop. It can take courage to let these things go and it may take time and focus but the space that's created from freeing yourself up from old ways of being can feel like a breath of fresh air and invite new possibilities.
- No matter how strange it seems when you first hear or read about it, if you put aside judgements and misconceptions, approach it with an open mind and an open heart, the results can be incredible. In fact, although we can't predict what the exact outcome will be, the results can be incredible even for people who aren't open minded but simply want to feel a bit better and are willing to make some changes. For example, if physical change isn't possible for whatever reason, perhaps the result will be a mental or emotional shift or vice versa. Sometimes people even experience a positive shift in others around them as a result of simply working on what they need to change within themselves, rather than trying to get other people to change. However, a practitioner can't 'force' change on anyone. Sometimes when people start to feel more connected, supported and empowered, it feels so unfamiliar that they grab back on to the old comfort zone even if it's a very uncomfortable comfort zone! Real change requires a readiness to self-reflect and move through these types of fears in order to reach a place of true, healthy comfort. This can be greatly enhanced by some kind of ongoing self-practice and/or you might realise you need to add in some other standard medical support if you discover you have more complex needs.
- Shamanism is essentially a very vibrant and playful practice that often reminds us to laugh and gives us the ability to see the lighter side of life, even during challenging times. From a shamanic point of view, there's a sense that everyone and everything is somehow connected. There is no separation, just an intricate web of life that connects all of us and all that is. So I guess the practice tends to inspire an inclusive perspective that reminds us that we don’t just live on earth, we are the earth. We are the stars, the moon, the sun. Perhaps, just like them, we are all here to shine and inspire others to do the same.
